Powerboat courses

A.A.P Marine Sea Services offer the following courses. Own boat tuition is available, please contact us for further details. All powerboat courses are endorsed by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association), all instructors are fully qualified to teach these courses and all certificates are original and genuine. Accommodation can be arranged. To book a place on any of the courses or to check course availability please contact us. Courses start at 0930 from our base in Puerto Marina, Benalmadena and normally we finish around 1730 with a break for lunch in between.

Powerboat Level 1 - Introduction to Powerboating

This course is the first in the RYA powerboating scheme. The aim of this course is to provide a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. Course includes safety, preparation of the boat, boat handling techniques and manoeuvres, leaving and coming alongside and towing and being towed.

Powerboat Level 2 - National Powerboat Course

The Powerboat Level 2 course forms the backbone of the RYA powerboating scheme. This course gives the student all of the necessary practical skills and theory to pilot a powerboat in coastal waters. Successful completion of the course entitles you for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for power driven vessels up to 10m (33ft). A CEVNI test is required for the inland endorsement of the ICC. The course is mostly practical and includes low and high speed handling. There is a theory section to the course that includes basic chartwork.

Intermediate Powerboat - Day Cruising Course

This course takes the knowledge and skills gained in the Powerboat Level 2 course to the next level. The aim of this course is to teach the skills necessary to make longer coastal passages by day. Course includes cruise planning, GPS navigation, pilotage skills and considerations for making coastal passages.

Duration: 2 days

Required knowledge: Competent to Powerboat Level 2

Recommendations: VHF operators certificate, First Aid certificate

Advanced Powerboat - Day and Night Course

Intended for the serious amateur and professional use, this course is designed to further your skills and encompasses a much larger spectrum of subjects. The aim of this course is to teach the seamanship required to pilot a powerboat safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters. Please contact us if you are in any doubt about the prerequisites for this course.

Upon successful completion of the advanced powerboat course, you will be awarded the Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate. If you wish to gain the Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence you will be required to take a practical exam, this can be booked through us. Please can contact us in advance of taking the course if you intend to take the exam also. It must be understood that the Advanced Powerboat course requires you to have a very high degree of experience and knowledge before enrolling, we may require you to take an exam prior to taking the course and proof may be required of experience.

Duration: Two days (including one night passage)

Required knowledge: Competent to the standard of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate, RYA Day Skipper Shorebased (or equivalent knowledge), VHF operators certificate, First Aid certificate

ICC course and assessment

The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is a requirement by law in most European countries. It proves that you have met or exceeded minimum standards in training to enable you to safely pilot a motor cruiser. This course and assesment is intended for people who wish to pilot motor vessels in excess of 10m (33 ft) and up to 24m (80ft). The course is usually run aboard your own boat and as such is tailor made for each client. Course includes practical manouvres at sea and in a marina. There is also a theory section to the course and a short written exam. A CEVNI test is required for the inland endorsement of the ICC.

A current photograph is required for your license. The ICC is only available to British residents or bona fide British citizens.

PWC Proficiency Certificate

The RYA PWC Proficiency certificate is the ideal choice for the experienced rider or newcomer alike, you will learn to get more enjoyment from your craft as well as safety issues and responsibility. It has become compulsary in some areas to hold a license for a Personal Water Craft (jet ski), this course fulfils these licensing requirements. The course includes the launch and recovery of a PWC, craft anatomy, high and low speed handling, safety and theory. Please note that you will be required to provide a current photograph for your license.

Own boat tuition

Own boat tuition to perfect those skills

Need a refresher or to brush up on you skills? Or, perhaps you have purchased a new vessel and would like an instructor with you for your maiden voyage. Our patient and professional instructors are happy to assist you in any way we can. The most requested reason for own boat tuition is when boat owners invite non boat owners to stay aboard and one of our instructors assist with learning crewing duties and familiarization aboard. Please call for hourly and daily rates.

Note 1 - 8 to 11 year olds will receive the Powerboat Level 1 certificate which will be endorsed The holder should only use powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult on board the craft.
Note 2 -12 to 16 year olds will receive the Powerboat Level 2 certificate which will be endorsed The holder should only use powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult.
Note 3 - under 16's will receive the PWC Proficiency Certificate endorsed The holder must be accompanied by an adult (over 18) who is also a holder of a proficiency certificate.
A.A.P Marine Sea School requires that any client under the age of 16 years is accompanied by a parent or guardian when taking any course.
