Am I legally required to hold a license for my vessel? | ||

The short answer is yes. If you intend to use your British flagged vessel abroad you are required by law to hold a certificate of competance. | ||

What license do I need? | ||
| ||
The license required by law is the International Certificate of Competance (I.C.C). Which course you take in order to obtain your certificate of competance depends on the length of your boat. | ||

If your vessel is less than 10m (33 ft) |
|
| ||
|
The Powerboat Level 2 two day course qualifies you for your certificate of competance for a power driven vessel of up to 10m in length. Please see the courses page for full details. |

If your vessel is between 10m (33 ft) and 24m (80ft) |
|
| ||
|
The I.C.C course and assesment qualifies you for the certificate of competance for a power driven vessel of this size. Please see the courses page for full etails. |

Can I use my license for sailing yachts? | ||
| ||
No. The two disciplines are different. If you wish to gain a certificate of competance for a sailing vessel, it is necesary to take a sailing course. | ||

Can I ride a jet ski or personal watercraft (PWC) with my license? | ||
| ||
No. Personal watercraft (PWC) or jet skis are not covered by your International Certificate of Competance (I.C.C), you are required to take a separate course to gain the license necessary to ride a PWC. Please see the courses page for full details of this course. | ||

| Can I use my certificate to run a charter boat? | ||
| ||
The business of running a commercial vessel such as a charter boat should not be taken lightly, however, some of the certificates that are used for recreational purposes can be used also for commercial purposes by obtaining a Commercial Endoresement. Please contact us for further information if you intend to use your certificate for commercial purposes. | ||
